It is funny but I feel that I am closer to finding "god" now that I have left ministry than I have felt in a long time. I have, at this point, completely rejected the concept of theism as it is held within modern-day Christianity in favor of something akin to Panentheism. I believe that there is something beyond us and within us that we call god and that was best exemplified in the person of Jesus.

Greg -

Great post and thoughts. I, too, have grappled with these same questions. And I have to say that I am surprised to find myself agreeing with Spong here - the evangelical God that I have heard so much about doesn't seem to be defensible to an honest observer. Two books I've found especially helpful in this regard are Marilyn McCord Adams philosophical works "Horrendous Evil and the Goodness of God" and "Christ and Horrors: The Coherence of Christology" - along with "The Evangelical Universalist".
