As the Republicans meet in Minnesota this week to nominate John McCain for president and someone nobody (including himself, it would seem) had heard of until last week for vice-president, I was reminded of an article from The Onion dated January 17, 2001, just prior to Bush’s inauguration. It has proven to be quite prophetic.

Bush: ‘Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over’

A quote:

“My fellow Americans,” Bush said, “at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us.”

Well done, George. Mission accomplished.
