I was planning a post-Olympic post earlier this week, but just haven’t gotten around to it. Thrilled, of course, to see the US Basketball team win gold, and thrilled for Coach K as well. And the story of the U.S. Men’s Volleyball team’s gold after the tragedy in the coach’s family was a great one. But, the Olympics is old news now, so on to this week’s news.

Despite the U.S. Open beginning Monday - which normally demands much of my attention every evening for two weeks - I’ve found myself watching more of the DNC in the evenings than tennis. I’ve largely watched MSNBC’s coverage. However, sometimes when the talking heads reappear and I’ve just had enough of them already, I will switch over to a “DNC08” channel that’s available on DishTV. It broadcasts a live feed of everything instead of just what the networks deem important. No heads to try to explain what you just heard as if you couldn’t comprehend it yourself. No banners on the screen with quotes from the speaker made just seconds ago. No distracting news tickers scrolling across the bottom of the screen. And, you see those speeches that take place while Pat Buchanan is shouting at everyone. It’s a nice change every now and then.

There have been some very good speeches already at the convention. I’d hate to have to follow some of these, but we’ll see if Barack is up for it tonight. Last night was historic as he became the first African-American nominated for president by a major party, and so tonight’s speech will be historic as well. I look forward to hearing what he has to say.

Here’s what some of the bigger names said:

Michelle Obama
Ted Kennedy
Hillary Clinton
John Kerry
Bill Clinton
Joe Biden

Also of note, and also being posted by everyone else in the world, is a benediction given by author Donald Miller. I thought it was well done.

So, tonight’s going to be a busy TV night. College football kicks off, Raphael Nadal is on court at the Open, and Barack Obama speaks at the DNC. I plan to do a lot of sitting in a comfortable chair tonight.
