On local radio this morning, while talking about Arkansas football and the current BCS rankings, someone brought up South Florida. The Bulls are #2 in the first BCS rankings and, as you may recall, their new basketball coach is former Hog coach Stan Heath.
The host made the following comment:
Stan Heath wanted to go to a school with a football program.
Ouch.
After watching the games thus far, it seems a very real possibility that Arkansas could end up winless in the SEC. I still think they’ll take MSU at home, but South Carolina is the only other home game remaining, and without some drastic changes, I don’t think they can win that game. Tennessee and LSU are out of the question, and even the trip to Ole Miss doesn’t seem to be the guaranteed win I would have thought before the season began. At best they’ll get 2 wins. Is that enough to look elsewhere for a coach? I have to think it would be. Without a couple of freak athletes (Matt Jones, Darren McFadden), the program would be in worse shape. On the other hand, without those guys, they might already have a new coach.
I’ve heard a lot of people say that the football coach will get one more year regardless. Really? Surely a 2-6 mark in the SEC (and 6-6 overall) would have negative impact on a coach’s status, especially considering you had the best pair of running backs in the country, and that it would mean three of the last four years finishing at .500 or worse. And speaking of Stan Heath, while I think they made the right move, his program did seem to improve every year until this past season, where they seemed to take a step (albeit small) backward. He was shown the door. Considering this, can they justify giving the football coach another year if this season continues on the track it’s currently on?
Midnight madness
It’s that time again. Praise the Lord! Basketball practice began early Saturday morning, and tip-off for the 2007-2008 season draws nigh. Let’s go Duke!
