I missed this on Monday, but a friend emailed me last night to inform me of the death of Calvert DeForest, known primarily for his charcter on NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman, Larry “Bud” Melman. He also made appearances (as himself, since NBC owned the Melman character) on Letterman’s current CBS show as well. I’ve always been a huge Letterman fan, and always loved DeForest’s “Melman” character.
Here’s something I’m trying out: bookmooch.com. If you like to read, but want to cut down on book buying expenses, this may be something worth looking into. Basically, you list books you want to give away, and also list books you’d like to receive. For each book you give away, you get points, which can be used to “buy” books from others who are giving them away. I signed up last night and listed about 20 books, and have already had requests for two of them. I’ll be mailing them out today or tomorrow, and I’ve also already requested one that has been sent to me. The only cost is the shipping cost, which, via USPS Media Mail, is usually less than $2 per book. If you read a lot, check it out.
Speaking of reading, I’ve come to somewhat of a standstill on my current books (see sidebar). I always find it difficult to read much during March. Anyway, I hope to finish these soon, and I have a few others I hope to pick up next, including my first BookMooch book No Perfect People Allowed by John Burke, The Fire That Consumes by Edward Fudge, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, and The Rest of God by Mark Buchanan.
I was thrilled to find out yesterday that Tony Kornheiser is back on radio again. As I mentioned in this comment, I’ve been a Kornheiser fan for a long time. I used to like him on ESPN’s The Sports Reporters in years past, as well as his occasional appearances on Don Imus‘ radio show Imus in the Morning. I’ve read a couple of his books, which were hilarious, and I still love watching PTI on a daily basis. About five years ago, I discovered his radio show on ESPN radio, and loved it until he retired the show in 2004. And, that’s been my favorite of all things Kornheiser, probably because it was a few hours instead of a few minutes long.
And now, as of last month, he’s returned to radio and you can hear his daily show online via Washington Post Radio. It airs live from 7:30am - 9:30am (central time.) You can also subscribe to a podcast of the show or get it from iTunes. I didn’t get to listen to much of it this morning, but will probably listen to the mp3 later today and start trying to catch it every morning. It’s great to have Tony back.

I’ve been using bookmooch for a while now (6 months?) and really like it. Not surprisingly, it’s quite easy to get a Grisham novel or something from the Oprah book club…but nearly impossible to get anything from the best books of 2006 lists or Obama’s book, etc. However, if you build a big wishlist, you’ll get hits from time to time.
Here is an unofficial list of the most wished-for books on bookmooch: link
Other advice:
be sure to click the “related editions” link (or whatever it is called…I can’t access my wishlist page at the current moment) on your wishlist page to see if the paperback is available if the hardback is on your list, etc.
also, check out the moochbar (link), a bookmarklet that allows you to click a button on an Amazon page to go straight to that book in bookmooch.
