The BCS championship game has arrived. In just a few more hours, we’ll see who will play Boise State is the college football champion for the 2006 season. Ohio State has been #1 all year. Florida is the champion of the SEC, one of the strongest conferences out there.

An ESPN poll showed yesterday that the most people picked Ohio State to win by a large margin. Runner-up was Florida winning a close one. On ESPN’s The Sports Reporters yesterday a good point was made. Someone - and I can’t remember if it was Mitch Albom, John Feinstein or Mike Lupica - said that all bets are off at this point. It’s been something like 50 days since OSU last played, and 37 since Florida last played. No matter how either team may have looked throughout the season, and how good they may have looked at the end, it’s been a long layoff and who can tell what will happen?

I would agree. After a such a break, it’s hard to know how the teams will play. I initially picked Ohio State and have stuck with them. I’m still picking them, but I won’t be surprised if Florida wins, either. If both teams play well, or at least the same, it should be a close one, too. I don’t see either team winning big, unless one team turns the ball over too much. I think all things being equal, it should be a good and close game.

Sad news out of USC, as their kicker was found at the bottom of a cliff this weekend. Police don’t suspect foul play in his death as the investigation continues.

Arkansas’ Jamaal Anderson and Chris Houston are apparently leaving early for the NFL draft. I personally think Houston should stay, but perhaps he’ll succeed now. I’m not surprised Anderson is leaving, and it’s probably the right choice, although obviously I’d like to see him stay. Also not surprising is that LSU’s JaMarcus Russell and South Carolina’s Sidney Rice are leaving as well.

One humorous moment on The Sports Reporters yesterday was while they were discussing the fact that it’s hard to know what will happen in the title game. It’s hard to know who will play their best and who won’t. Someone was attempting to make this point and said, “Was USC that much better than Michigan?” No comments. “Was LSU that much better than Notre Dame?” And that point, Feinstein responded, “Yes, actually, they were.” Good one, John. And I agree 100%.

Update: ESPN has posted an NCAA Simulation 07 which has Ohio State winning 28-17. (My earlier prediction was OSU 27-24.) Of the BCS bowls, it looks like the simulation was on target (at least with picking the winner) for the Orange and Sugar, but missed the Fiesta and Rose.
