Just a few things I’ve seen in the last couple of days but haven’t gotten around to posting yet:

Chris Gonzalez is reading through the Koran and recording his thoughts on a new blog, Blogging The Koran. As one who has never read the Koran (and probably never will), I’ll be interested to see his thoughts on Isalm’s sacred book from a Christian perspective.

I realize that practically everyone is mentioning this today, but it looks like Pat is at it again. A friend sent me this story this morning, commenting that maybe God is using Pat Robertson to tell us all that Pat Robertson is an idiot. That sounds about right.

A slice from Relevant:

Lake Superior State University in Michigan has released its annual list of words it feels should be banned for misuse. Among them are any combination of celebrity couple’s names, such as Brangelina or TomKat. One contributor noted that the practice of combining names was “so lame and pathetic that it’s ‘lamethetic’” …

I could not agree more.

Looks like Duke has invited two of the accused LaCrosse players back to school. (The third player who was accused had graduated just prior to officially being charged.) They are being reinstated as “students in good standing.” In related news, as reported last week, the North Carolina bar filed ethics charges against D.A. Mike Nifong because of his handling of this case. I’ve got to believe his career is pretty much over at this point.

Pat Forde is not being very kind to Nick Saban (and others before him.) Basically, he calls him a liar and seems to liken Saban to a college football version of John Kerry (I was against taking the Alabama job before I took it.) Dan Le Batard is equally vicious. Mike Celzic is not being much kinder, although he is correct in saying that Saban had to take the job. It was a great move, and the right one, despite being handled poorly on Saban’s part. Like Spurrier before him, he is (IMO) better as a college coach and is returning to where he belongs. Fortunately for Alabama, Saban saw the Tide’s offer as better than Purdue’s.

And, if Forde is correct (i.e. all coaches are liars), then look for Charlie Weis to accept an NFL job in the next few days.

Speaking of Miami coaches leaving, Pat Riley is leaving the Heat - although only temporarily. Riley is having surgery to correct knee and hip problems, and will be out indefinitely. Assistant Ron Rothstein will lead the team in Riley’s absence. Well, at least he hasn’t been denying that he’s having surgery for the past 6 weeks…

There’s a good article on espn.com called The Night College Football Went To Hell about the 1987 Fiesta Bowl (#1 Miami vs #2 Penn State) which was perhaps a forerunner to the modern day BCS championship game. It also details some of the behavior of the Hurricane players on that team. It doesn’t seem like it’s been 20 years since Miami players were a bunch of arrogant, out of control punks. Oh, that’s right - it hasn’t.

It’s hard to imagine a better finish to a bowl game than the Fiesta Monday night. (Well, okay, the Texas-USC finish last year was better, simply because it was for the championship.) Boise State’s win over Oklahoma finished in tremendous fashion, with both teams staging comebacks and Boise State’s bag of trick plays that finally won the game for them. And I must say that I am so glad I went to bed early and missed it. (I may place myself on next year’s moron list for that reason alone…) I did manage to watch the highlights yesterday morning, but it just wasn’t the same. Hopefully, ESPN Classic will be airing it sometime in the next few days and I can watch it as it unfolded (still not the same as live, but it’s something.) Oh, and if my sad excuse for predictions continue, look for Notre Dame to win tonight and Florida to beat Ohio State next week.
