Well, I can only think of one way to say it: this weekend’s sports have sucked.
First, of course, was the USA basketball team’s debacle at the world championships which I’ve already mentioned. Sorry, but we just shouldn’t be losing to Greece. I’ve already heard (and not surprisingly) people wanting to blame it on Krzyzewski. We need to blame it on the NBA. These guys haven’t played real basketball in so long, they can’t play with other countries who do. Until that changes, we’re not going to be any better than anyone else, no matter how much “talent” we have.
Next, college football. Arkansas had high hopes of pulling off a major upset. I didn’t think they’d win, but I thought they would keep it close. I stand corrected. They killed themselves with turnovers and penalties in the first half, then the defense - which had played well in the first half - just couldn’t stay with USC in the second half as they started clicking. I didn’t even hang around to see Mustain play - just saw in the paper that he played and drove them for a touchdown. Now everyone on talk radio Monday will be complaining that he didn’t play the entire game. News flash - it wouldn’t have mattered. I thought Johnson did well in the first half, and there wasn’t much to fault him with. Maybe if Felix could hold onto the ball, it would’ve been even at the half. I do see hope for the rest of the season, though, unlike last year. If they can fine tune a few things, they should have a good year. Oh yeah, and Wally Hall is still an idiot.
Of course, not only did Arkansas lose, but Tennessee, Auburn and Notre Dame all won. Notre Dame didn’t impress me, but I didn’t watch a lot of that game with Arkansas playing at the same time. Tennessee looked pretty good against Cal. I think time will tell for them. I think there’s no doubt they’re better than last year’s horrible season. But I think Cal may have been overrated, and Tennessee was up for the game because of that as well as wanting to redeem themselves from last season. It was a good combination for them (along with playing at home.) Auburn doesn’t play anyone on the road this year, so they should have a great year. I’m hoping for another undefeated 3rd place finish for the Tigers (see 2004). Then that little podunk town in south Alabama can vote them national champions in their local paper again.
The worst was about an hour or so ago, however, when Benjamin Becker knocked Andre Agassi out of the U.S. Open and into retirement in 4 sets. I knew it would come eventually - he just wasn’t going to win it - but you always hope for one more. I may write more about it later, but I’m going to miss seeing Agassi on the court. I will still watch the remainder of the U.S. Open, but it’s not going to be as interesting as it was before today.
